The Dr. John P. Rier Jr. Biology Student Travel Fund

Dr. John P. Rier Jr.The Dr. John P. Rier Biology Student Travel Fund was established in memory of the late Dr. Rier to encourage undergraduate and graduate students to share their research results and network with biologists and emerging biologists. It provides transportation reimbursement for students to travel to scientific meetings to present their research findings, attend and participate in research institutes and seminars and/or engage in individual research projects under a specialist. It does not include registration fees or room and board.

The fund represents the interest and concern for educational enrichment and Biology career development of students that was held by the late Dr. Rier. A Board of Administrators governs the fund.

WHO WAS DR. JOHN P. RIER JR.

Dr. John P. Rier Jr. was born in Boyce, VA and attended public school in Clarke County, VA. He earned a BS degree in biology from Virginia State College, an MS degree in botany from Howard University, MA and PhD degrees in biology from Harvard University. His major teaching and research interests in botany were plant tissue culture, morphogenesis, physiology and anatomy. Subsequent to a research fellowship at the George Washington Carver Foundation at Tuskegee Institute, AL and further graduate study, he held professorial and administrative positions at Rutgers University and Howard University. Federal agencies, organizations and associations requested his services as a consultant.

His career spanned over 40 years, providing instruction and research training to undergraduate and graduate students. Publishing extensively, he encouraged students and colleagues in their research endeavors. He was a member of professional and scientific organizations, receiving awards and citations in recognition of his contributions to science, mentorship of students and commitment to high academic performance. His legacy is reflected in the accomplishments of former students who are successfully participating in teaching, research and administrative careers in science.

FUND APPLICATION GUIDELINES

  • African American undergraduate and graduate students in the biological sciences are encouraged to apply.
  • Submission of official documentation of the meeting, seminar or conference to which the students wishes to travel is required. In the case of a student traveling to do research, a statement must be submitted from the senior researcher under whom the student will be studying.
  • A completed application packet, including application form, recommendations and other supporting materials as required on the application form must be submitted and postmarked by May 1st and December 1st of each year to:
