THE OHIO UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF OSTEOPATHIC MEDICINE

Surrounded by the sloping waves of green that blanket the hills of Southeastern Ohio and the stately  red-brick architecture of Ohio University, the College of Osteopathic Medicine (OU-COM) boasts a setting unlike any other. With its rich culture, major college sports and legion of recreational opportunities, it is an atmosphere that is, at once, both pastoral and electric.

Ohio University College of OsteopathicCreated by the Ohio Legislature in 1975, OU-COM is the only osteopathic medical school in Ohio and was the tenth osteopathic medical school founded in the nation.  OU-COM has built a national reputation as a model for primary care medical education.  OU-COM graduates the highest percentage of primary care doctors (56%) of any medical school in Ohio.  OU-COM is also the host site of the only Center of Excellence for Multicultural Medicine in Ohio, one of only 25 in the nation.

Recognizing that there are many different learning styles, OU-COM has developed two innovative curricular tracks for our students.  The majority of entering students are enrolled in the Clinical Presentation Continuum curriculum and 24 OU-COM students take part in the Patient-Centered Continuum curriculum. Both curricula are designed to reaffirm the college's dedication to educating primary care physicians and feature early clinical exposure, clinical case studies, integration of basic sciences during clinical training, and a continuum of knowledge from year one of medical school through residency training.

We provide as much direct contact with patients as possible throughout the educational journey. Starting in Year I and II, students begin to hone their history-taking, psycho-social and physical examination skills as part of OU-COM's pioneering Patient Simulation Program. Ambulatory facilities like the University Osteopathic Medical Center and satellite clinics in outlying areas supply students additional early clinical contact during the first two years.

Ohio University College of OsteopathicIn both curricula, third and fourth year students move on to one of the college's four Centers for Osteopathic Research and Education (CORE) in Ohio. In the first assignment at the CORE site, each student spends eight weeks working alongside a primary care physician. Next, the student begins a 17-month series of rotations -- through a spectrum of primary care and sub-specialty disciplines -- under the watchful eye of hospital- and office-based clinical faculty.

Reality replaces rhetoric at OU-COM with ethnic minorities comprising approximately 24% and women representing 61% of the entering class of 2002.  The college also admits many non-traditional students who have chosen to become physicians after enriching themselves in other careers.  Whatever the background, students come together at OU-COM to prepare themselves for practice in a world that is growing more diverse each day.

OU-COM offers two special initiatives designed to enhance and strengthen a student's premedical preparation.  The Summer Scholars program strengthens the undergraduate premedical preparation of students from underrepresented ethnic minority and educationally or economically disadvantaged backgrounds for admission into medical school.  This six week program offers a scholarship (including program materials), room, board, travel expenses to and from Summer Scholars and if all admission requirements have been met, an opportunity to interview for medical school.

The Postbaccalaureate program furthers student preparedness for entry into medical school.  Students are expected to complete advanced courses and learning activities as part of the one-year program prior to medical school entrance.
