Overview
The Johns Hopkins University Advanced Academic Programs of the Zanvyl Krieger School of Arts and Sciences offers seven master's degree programs for those wishing to attend graduate school. Drawing upon over a century of research and teaching expertise, the programs offer advanced instruction in scientific fields of current interest and innovative graduate study in the humanities and social sciences. While based on the latest scientific and scholarly knowledge, course work emphasizes the application of such knowledge to practical problems. Classes are designed to provide individual attention and to encourage student contribution.
A master’s degree can be earned in Applied Economics, Biotechnology, Communication in Contemporary Society, Environmental Sciences and Policy, Government, Liberal Arts, or Writing. Students who wish to take only a few specific courses may apply as special students. Courses in all programs are offered in the fall, spring, and summer. Students in this program are encouraged not to enroll in more than two courses per term. However, this limit may be exceeded with permission of the respective program committee. All programs are accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.
Depending on the program, classes are offered in Rockville, MD; Baltimore, MD; Washington, D.C.; Aberdeen, MD; or online.
Programs of Study
The Master of Arts in Applied Economics is designed to develop the skill sets of economic reasoning and constructing and estimating economic models through the use of econometrics. This is accomplished by virtue of a rigorous curriculum and a talented and committed staff of instructors.
The Master of Science in Biotechnology offers areas of concentration in Bioinformatics, Biotechnology Enterprise, and Regulatory Affairs. A Biotechnology Enterprise certificate is also available. This program offers students the ability to learn, advance and succeed in this exciting field with a variety of learning opportunities designed to meet the needs of working adults.
The Master of Arts in Communication in Contemporary Society offers areas of concentrations in Digital Library, Film and Media, and Political Communication. The program is designed for working professionals
and recent graduates who want to be retrained for the new media environment, and for anyone who wants to better understand our media-saturated world.
The Master of Science in Environmental Sciences and Policy offers a flexible curriculum and a broad selection of electives, which allows students to tailor their academic experience to their personal or professional needs. Students emerge with expertise in science and public policy that enables them to assume key positions in public and private entities responsible for safeguarding our environmental future.
The Master of Arts in Government offers a concentration in Law and Justice and Political Communication. Students in this program are given the tools to examine the governmental and social institutions in our society, to assess prospects for reform, and to affect change.
The Master of Liberal Arts offers a certificate in Advanced Graduate Study in Liberal Arts. Established in 1962, this program has gained national recognition for the quality of its teaching and the breadth of its course offerings. This is an interdisciplinary program that provides students with an exceptional opportunity to explore a world of knowledge. The program draws on outstanding Hopkins faculty, as well as leading experts from cultural, artistic, government, and academic institutions in the region.
The Master of Arts in Writing offers concentrations in Fiction, Nonfiction, Science-Medical Writing, and Poetry. The overriding vision of this program is to focus on its student writers and their creative writing goals. Through an innovative program structure, an array of courses, and a faculty of practicing writers, the program offers a nurturing, demanding home to develop or improve their skills.
Financial Aid
Federal financial aid in the form of student loans is available on a limited basis to degree candidates who are enrolled in two ore more courses per term.
Cost of Study
Tuition for 2002–03 is $1,885 per course for all programs except for the Master of Arts in Writing program, which is $1,685 per course, and the Master of Liberal Arts program, which is $1,420 per course. Please visit www.jhu.edu/advanced for changes in tuition.
Location
The University is located in the residential Charles Village section of northern Baltimore City. Through its Advanced Academic Programs, it also offers course in Rockville, MD and Washington, D.C. Specific programs also offers courses online and at the HEAT Center in Aberdeen, MD.
Applying
The School of Arts and Sciences encourages all to apply who have serious academic interest and who wish to enroll in a graduate program. Admission to graduate programs is based on an overall evaluation of credentials, including the applicant's bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited U.S. college or university. Most programs require a GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in the latter half of an applicant’s studies, or a graduate degree in an appropriate field. A $50 application fee must accompany the application.
